If you are planning on staying in Malaga for a longer period of time and becoming a resident, you will quickly notice that you will need a Número de Identidad de Extranjeros (NIE) for almost all paperwork, such as opening a bank account, getting paid work or even getting a gym membership.
This step-by-step guideline will get you your NIE as swiftly as possible.
The comisería (main police station) at Plaza de Manuel Azaña, 3 is authorised to issue NIEs. You have to make an online appointment before going. Click here to make your online appointment following these steps:
Select “Málaga” and click “Aceptar”. Click on the box next to “Trámites Cuerpo Nacional de Policía”, select “Policia Certificados y Asignación NIE” and click “Aceptar”.
Here you will get some more information on the application process. Click “Entrar”. On the next web page select “Pasaporte” and enter your passport number, as well as your name. Complete the Captcha and click “Aceptar”.
Click “Solicitar Cita“. Select “CNP Provincial, Plaza de Manuel Azaña” and click “Siguiente”. Enter your phone number and your email address (twice). Click “Siguiente”.
Here you can select the date and time of your choice. Click “Siguiente” to confirm.
You have now made an appointment to apply for a NIE.
1. Fill out the EX15 form, which you can download here. Fill it out in clear handwriting and in capital letters. If you would like an English translation of the form to help you, you can download one here. However, note that only the Spanish form will be accepted, as the English form is not an official document.
2. Fill out the form Tasa modelo 790-012 and pay the fee of around € 9 – € 12 for your NIE.
Enter your passport number, name and address in “Identificación“. Scroll to “Autoliquidación” and make sure “Principal” is selected. Then select “.Asignación de Número de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE) a instancia del interesado.“. In the next section “Declarante” type “Málaga” as localidad. The date will appear automatically. The fee will appear in “Ingreso“. Select “En efectivo” so you can pay the amount in cash at the bank. Complete the Captcha and click “Descargar impreso rellenado” to download your form.
Take the form to any bank and pay your fee in cash. They will give you a proof of payment.
3. Check your passport expiry date, as the minimum validity is six months. Make a copy of all pages with information or text, including the cover. We recommend you to make at least two sets of copies.
TIPS & TRICKS
Return on the set time and date of your appointment, turn right and stand in the left line for your appointment.
If you have filled out the paperwork correctly, then the officer will tell you can come back in one week to pick up your NIE.
If you have NOT filled out the paperwork correctly, then ask what needs to be corrected and do it immediately at the police station so you don’t have to return.
TIPS & TRICKS
About one week after completing the full application, you can pick up your NIE.
(Note: the NIE is an identification number for foreigners, not to be confused with being resident.)
