La Farola de Orellana

La Farola de Orellana is one of those traditional tapas bars in Malaga where time seems to stand still.

This beloved establishment has been serving locals and visitors to Malaga city centre for decades, and recently it has expanded significantly by taking over the premises formerly occupied by KGB after it closed.

The bar has been in business since 1938, making it one of the most authentic spots for traditional tapas in Malaga’s historic centre.

The clientele is genuinely mixed: while Malaga’s historic centre attracts increasing numbers of international tourists, you’ll find plenty of Andalusian locals and Spanish visitors enjoying the lively atmosphere where classic tracks from Rocío Jurado or Camilo Sesto provide the soundtrack to excellent food and wine.

What makes La Farola de Orellana special

The restaurant is famous for its caracoles (snails cooked in a rich, spicy sauce), fresh fried fish, quality seafood, lamb skewers and the intriguingly named papas mala leche (literally ‘bad milk potatoes’, a spicy potato dish that’s far more delicious than its name suggests).

The atmosphere combines friendly service with competitive prices that few establishments in central Malaga can match.

Current owners Manuel Villena and Patricia Carralero took over the business eleven years ago from the founding Orellana family, adding ‘La Farola’ (meaning ‘the streetlamp’) to the name while maintaining its characteristic concept of picoteo divertido (fun nibbling or casual sharing of small plates).

Expansion brings new possibilities

The recent expansion has nearly tripled the original space, giving La Farola de Orellana more capacity and a larger kitchen.

This means they can now offer more elaborate dishes like traditional Spanish rice dishes alongside their legendary fried fish and palometa (ray) strips.

The new premises maintain a vintage aesthetic with period touches, including an antique cash register.

Both spaces work together seamlessly, separated by just a few steps across the street.

The Guía Repsol recently recognised La Farola de Orellana with their Solete award, given to emblematic establishments that offer quality dining accessible to everyone.
