Street parking in Malaga

Street parking in Malaga can feel like a competitive sport, especially in the city centre. But once you understand the colour-coded system used across the city, parking on the street becomes far less intimidating and a lot more manageable.
Street parking in Malaga is regulated by the SARE system (Servicio Andaluz de Regulación de Estacionamiento), Andalucía’s official parking authority. Coloured lines painted along the kerb tell you exactly where you can park, how long you can stay and whether you need to pay.
This guide explains everything you need to know about street parking in Malaga, from blue and green zones to fines, free parking and the city’s infamous gorrillas.

Free street parking in Malaga
White-lined parking spaces are the holy grail of street parking in Malaga. These spaces are completely free and have no general time restrictions.
You’ll usually find white line parking in residential neighbourhoods outside the historic centre, although the occasional space does exist closer in if you’re lucky.
Even in white zones, it’s important to check nearby signs carefully, as some streets have temporary restrictions for cleaning, deliveries or events.

Blue zone parking in Malaga
Blue zone parking is by far the most common form of regulated street parking in Malaga, particularly in central neighbourhoods and busy commercial areas.
If you see blue lines painted along the kerb, a fee is due during the following hours:
- Monday to Friday: 9am–2pm and 4–8pm
- Saturday: 1am–2pm
Outside these times, blue zone parking in Malaga is completely free. That means evenings, Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday are prime times to park without paying.
Payment is made either at grey SARE parking meters (marked with the blue SARE logo) or via a mobile app. Most blue zones allow a maximum stay of 150 minutes (two and a half hours), after which you must move your car even if spaces are available.
Some high-rotation areas are marked as SARE 30, with shorter time limits and higher rates. These zones are designed to keep traffic moving on Malaga’s busiest shopping streets.
Using a parking app such as Telpark, SMASSA (the official municipal app) or EasyPark makes things much easier. You can extend your parking time remotely, receive reminders before your time expires and even get refunds for unused minutes if you leave early.
Green zone parking in Malaga
Green lines indicate resident-priority parking zones. These areas are intended mainly for local residents who hold a parking permit for that specific neighbourhood.
In some districts, visitors are allowed to park in green zones for very short periods, often at higher rates. However, the rules vary by area and signage is not always clear.
Unless you are completely certain that visitor parking is permitted and know the exact time limit, it’s best to avoid green zone parking in Malaga altogether. The risk of a fine or even having your car towed far outweighs any potential savings.
What to do if you get a parking fine in Malaga
Finding a small white and blue ticket on your windscreen is never pleasant, but Malaga’s parking system is more forgiving than most.
If you receive a fine, you can usually cancel it (anular) at any SARE parking meter for a reduced fee.
Unusually, Malaga allows up to 10 days to cancel a parking fine, although doing it as soon as possible is strongly recommended.
To cancel a fine, go to any parking meter in the area, select the annulment option, enter your vehicle registration and ticket number and pay the reduced amount.
However, if you miss the cancellation window, the fine increases significantly.
