Malaga’s world-famous Christmas Lights

Every December, Malaga transforms into a magical winter wonderland that captivates visitors from across Spain and beyond.

The city has gained a reputation as one of Spain’s premier destinations for holiday celebrations, combining centuries-old Andalusian traditions with contemporary artistic flair.

The 2025 Malaga Christmas lights promise to once again illuminate the historic streets, creating an enchanting atmosphere that has made this coastal city famous throughout Europe for its festive celebrations.

While official details from the Ayuntamiento (town hall) have yet to be confirmed, expectations are high for another spectacular display that will live long in the memory.

When will Malaga’s Christmas lights be switched on in 2025?

Based on previous years’ patterns, the grand switch-on ceremony for the Malaga Christmas lights 2025 is anticipated to take place on Friday, 28 November at 6.30pm.

However, these dates remain unconfirmed by Malaga’s local authorities, so visitors should check official sources closer to the time.

The lights typically operate daily from 6.30pm until midnight on Sunday through Wednesday, extending until 2am on Thursday through Saturday, and staying on until 6am on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Following tradition, the Christmas illuminations are expected to conclude on 4 January 2026, the day before the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos (Three Kings parade), which marks the end of the Spanish Christmas season.

Calle Larios: the centrepiece of Malaga’s Christmas display

The pedestrianised Calle Larios serves as the magnificent centrepiece of Malaga’s Christmas lights, drawing thousands of visitors each evening to witness its spectacular transformation.

In recent years, the street has been adorned with the ‘Heavenly Angels’ theme, featuring 16 celestial figures supported by 32 illuminated columns stretching along the entire length of this historic thoroughfare.

The famous light and sound shows typically occur three times each evening at 6.30pm, 8pm and 10pm, combining choreographed LED displays with festive music ranging from international Christmas classics to traditional Spanish carols.

Verdiales, a distinctive flamenco style from the Malaga province, has featured in recent years’ soundtracks, adding an authentic Andalusian touch to the celebrations.

Visitors often discover that attending the final show of the evening offers the most comfortable viewing experience, with fewer crowds and a more intimate atmosphere.

Christmas trees and decorations in Malaga city centre

Beyond the central display, Malaga’s Christmas lights traditionally encompass around three million LED bulbs across the city centre, creating an extensive network of festive illumination.

Next to Calle Larios, the neighbouring streets of Molina Lario, Calle San Juan and the network of streets connecting them also receive stunning three-dimensional installations, extending the magical ambience beyond the main artery.

The Alameda Principal boulevard transforms into an ‘enchanted forest’ with intricate lighting systems decorating the historic ficus trees.

At the same time, Calle San Juan has featured themed zones, including baroque-inspired chandeliers and Thai-style lantern installations.

Five prominent Christmas trees typically grace the city’s main squares: Plaza de la Marina, Plaza de la Constitución (featuring a walkthrough design), Plaza del Obispo (magnificently positioned beside the illuminated Cathedral), Plaza de Enrique García Herrera and Huelin park.

Malaga Cathedral video mapping show

The Cathedral of Malaga often hosts spectacular video mapping displays, projecting three-dimensional imagery onto its historic façade accompanied by synchronised music and lighting effects.

Throughout the casco histórico (historic centre), visitors can explore additional decorative elements, including luminous Three Kings figures next to the Alcazaba tunnel, musical-themed decorations in Calle Echegaray, and oversized Christmas ornaments in Plaza del Carbón.

The festive atmosphere also extends to the city’s culinary offerings, with street vendors serving traditional churros con chocolate (fried dough strips with hot chocolate) and other seasonal treats that perfectly complement an evening stroll through the illuminated streets.
